Vitamin B9

Folate supplements compared against the EU Nutrient Reference Value of 200 micrograms a day. Unlike the other B vitamins in this comparison, folate has a real tolerable upper intake level — 1,000 µg a day, and it is set for synthetic folic acid specifically. Several products here sit exactly on it.

Three different molecules are sold as ‘vitamin B9’ on these labels: synthetic folic acid, L-methylfolate (5-MTHF) and folinic acid. They are not interchangeable on a label, and at least one product in this comparison is titled ‘folic acid’ while containing none.

⚠️ Watch the units. Some packs state the amount in DFE (Dietary Folate Equivalents), a US-only unit that multiplies supplemental folic acid by 1.7 — so one tablet can be described as 1,667 µg DFE, 1,000 µg folic acid and 417% all at once, and only the middle figure compares with a UK label. Two products here print a percentage computed against the US Daily Value while labelling the column %NRV. Compare the microgram figure for the named form, never the percentage.
